THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE "PUTT-PUTT" BOATS
In 1933 Dan Sewell Sr. took a Briggs and Stratton engine, the type that was being used in household appliances such as washing machines and lawn mowers and installed it in one of his boats.  The first 3/4 horsepower, air cooled "putt-putt" was born.

Mr.  Stratton came in from Milwaukee to see for himself what these crazy Canadians in Horseshoe Bay were doing with his engines. Here was the former building contractor Dan Sewell with one of the first power boat and sports fishing operations on the coast, using lawnmowers in the highly competative rental and fishing market . Word quickly spread. The new "putt-putts" could cover more fishing hotspots with ease, and news of the excellent fishing spread across North America like wildfire, thanks in part by the thriving vaudeville theatre in Vancouver and major cities across both countries. Top-billed entertainers would play Vancouver by night on one of their tours and then motor to Horseshoe Bay to fish during the day.
The ability to go further out into the fishing grounds (without rowing) in a small self-powered boat that you could rent instead of own spread like wildfire across North America: there was excellent salmon fishing at Sewell's Marina, it was fun, and it was easy. The innovation of fitting lawn mower engines to rowboats separated Sewell's Marina from it's competitors.

The Early Celebrities

Big name stars came like Bing Crosby, Ray Milland and Fred McMurray as well as politicians such as the Rt. Honourable Lester Pearson and the Rt. Honourable John Diefenbaker, both Prime Ministers of Canada of their time.

The celebrity list from those heady days has continued, with famous professional athletes, actors and actresses visiting the Marina, more often these days to rent their own boat to escape into the peace and beauty of Howe Sound.
