| In the late 1950's controversy came to Horseshoe Bay. There was a proposal afoot for Blackball Ferries to establish a Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo run, with docking operations taking over the entire waterfront. Tom Sewell was President of the Horseshoe Bay Community Association at the time and the village hall was packed to the gills by those welcoming the ferries and those who didn't want the bay to change further. Tempers flared and neighbour turned against neighbour as the debate pro and against the ferries raged. The end result was a compromise retaining the centre part of the bay as parkland, restricting the ferry operations to the east side where they remain today. Then the upper levels highway arrived and the Bay became an extension of Vancouver. |
