  THE HISTORY OF SEWELL'S MARINA

The first white men set eyes on Horseshoe Bay in 1791, Spanish explorers under the Pilot Commander Jose Marie Narez. Just one year later, Captain George Vancouver saw the same stretch of water and named it Howe Sound after his friend Admiral Howe, who had just won honours fighting the French in the English Channel.

Captain Vancouver described Howe Sound as "a solemn inland sea, studded with beautiful forest-clad islands, covered with towering trees whose branches at high tide are lapped by clear waters teeming with fish".

This same natural beauty fired Dan Sewell's imagination 150 years later and the "teeming fish" were to make his family's name synonymous with Horseshoe Bay. He brought his family here in 1931 when it was just a collection of summer cottages and "dark as a pit at night, with just a few scattered lights".

Many visitors and countless memories later, Sewell's Marina continues to provide world-class services to its guests and community.  Horseshoe Bay is still a gathering point for vacationers, travellers and locals alike. Here is a brief and informal history of our remarkable little corner of the world.
